Records and Setup

Items and subsidiary accounting

Set up item identities, item types, units, and accounting assignments.

Overview

Set up item identities, item types, units, and accounting assignments.

Before you begin

Determine whether the item is inventory, non-inventory, service, assembly, item group, or kit/package. Identity is distinct from subsidiary-specific accounting and tracking.

Main task

  1. Open Items and create or edit the item with its supported class and base unit of measure.
  2. Maintain subsidiary assignments and purchase/sales accounting settings for companies that will use it.
  3. Review inventory tracking, bins, and unit conversions where supported.
  4. For sales, review the income account and recognition policy; configure deferred-account overrides where required.
  5. Validate availability in a purchase or sales line before live use.

Check the result

Transactions retain selected item/unit/accounting information for traceability. Assembly, group, and kit behavior differ from ordinary stock items.

If something goes wrong

An item can lack a subsidiary assignment, account, or inventory configuration. Complete the assignment before use. Do not change historical quantities to compensate for setup errors.
